Hello! My name is Jerard Baysic, I am the owner and founder of PXP Digital, a technology consulting and freelance agency that helps small businesses and startups build their online presence.
Background
There’s no denying how large the tech industry has grown in the last couple years. Early adopters have reaped the benefits of the societal shift into the online space and now everyone wants a piece of the pie. However, powerful corporations with a grip on the market dominated the online space and made it difficult for brick and mortar to compete at their level.
In today’s digital arena, you must work within the communication channels that these corporations have developed. Depending if you’re advertising a professional service, or releasing a newly developed product, it takes strategy in understanding which ecosystem your business should be a part of.
For example, if you are a local service-based business like a dentist, barber, pet groomer, or landscaper, your best bet is to build an online presence through Google or Yelp. If you sell your own branded products, it may be best to list the product on Amazon and slowly build up your brand through social media.
It takes a combination of organic and paid advertisement strategies across multiple platforms in order to scale your online presence. Understanding consumer behavior and where people search online for certain products or services, is ideal for competing in your market.
Where do I start?
I get it. It is quite daunting to figure out a marketing plan that best fits your business needs. You should be focusing on perfecting your craft, not sales and marketing. This is why many companies decide to outsource this work to agencies that specialize in this field.
Now every marketing agency has their own specialization. From website development, social media marketing, content creation, and paid advertisements.
What should be my budget?
The cost for these services range from one-time, project-based services to monthly recurring fees, it just depends on your business and what softwares and platforms are needed for that industry. This is why it is important to work with an agency or freelancer you trust and will give you their honest opinion on what is the best plan of action.
Let me give you an example.
The first step that businesses take when building their online presence is creating a website.
The cost to create a new website ranges anywhere between $2000-8,000 plus monthly maintenance and hosting fees of $50-250. Yes, I know that is a big range. This is because the cost of building a new website is based on how comprehensive and custom you would like the website to be.
For example, if you’d like to build a whole website from scratch (custom code), then it will be closer to the $10,000 mark. If you utilize a website-building software (like Wix or Squarespace), then it will be closer to the $2000-3000 range.
Now which software and agencies do I choose?
This is depending on what your short-term and long-term goals are for your business. If you are a local doctor’s office, then it is not necessary to create a new website from scratch. You can get your new website running in less than two weeks using a website-building software. Essentially, you would be paying a freelancer their graphic design expertise to create your website.
However, if you have an idea to create a new marketplace or platform, it may be best to create your website from scratch as the proprietary software is what makes your business unique and will get you funding in the future.
Choosing the right company
The higher your budget is, the better communication and quality you will get. The lower the budget is, the more hands-on you would need to be.
For example, you can definitely find an overseas agency through a freelance website that will charge you anywhere between $500-2500 to create your website. This may work for you if you have a simple website project with a well-crafted and detailed proposal and guidelines. However, the language barrier may cause discrepancies in project deliverables and you might not get the quality you were expecting.
It is apparent how saturated the freelance market is. You can find an abundance of different companies and freelancers to help you with your digital marketing needs.
The problem that many business owners face is figuring out who they can trust. Most agencies and freelancers focus on making a sale for their own business rather than giving honest feedback.
